The record
The 40 Watt name emerged from a makeshift rehearsal and party space above College Avenue. A Halloween gathering in 1979 helped establish it, and the club opened formally at another College Avenue address the following May. After several moves through downtown Athens, it reached its present home at 285 West Washington Street in April 1991.
This print concentrates on that address rather than the stage inside. The facade is held nearly straight on, with the curved illuminated sign and the recessed doorway forming one warm central shape. The number 285 remains visible at the entrance, while windows, brickwork and railings are reduced into broad dark planes beneath an unusually large blue field.
The building is quiet here, but its name, address and doorway are enough to identify a venue that has occupied several rooms without losing its place in Athens music history.
What this print shows
The composition gives most of its upper half to a deep blue painted field, pushing the low facade and glowing entrance toward the bottom of the frame. A nearly frontal viewpoint turns the curved sign into the visual hinge between the cool upper space and the warm amber doorway. Secondary windows, masonry and street furniture are simplified into horizontal bands and dark blocks, leaving the venue name and the number 285 as the only precise identity markers.

Not documented — and therefore not claimed
- The first Halloween gathering occurred definitively in 1978. — New Georgia Encyclopedia and an older Visit Athens walking-tour text use 1978, while the venue's own history and a contemporary 1983 newspaper account use 1979. Public copy follows the two mutually supporting 1979 sources and records the conflict here.
- The club moved to its present address in April 1990. — New Georgia Encyclopedia uses 1990, but the venue's own history and the Visit Athens walking tour independently use April 1991.
- A single bare bulb directly founded the club as a commercial venue. — The low-wattage origin of the name is well supported, but sources differ in their exact telling and the first party space preceded the formal nightclub.
- The print is official venue merchandise or affiliated with the venue. — The artwork and copy identify the depicted place but make no affiliation or licensing claim.
