THE TRESTLE

The Trail Creek Trestle was a nineteenth-century timber railroad structure in Athens's Dudley Park that later became closely associated with the city's music history; a modern pedestrian bridge now occupies the crossing.

The record

Built in 1883, the timber trestle carried the railroad over Trail Creek into Athens. Rail use ended in the late 1990s, but by then the structure had acquired another life after appearing on the back cover of R.E.M.'s 1983 debut album, Murmur. The surviving trestle was eventually removed, and a new Firefly Trail bridge opened at the crossing in 2023.

This print returns to the former wooden structure from below. Sunlit posts and diagonal braces rise through the right side of the frame in warm gold and deep brown. A broad pale-blue sky opens beside them, while light yellow-green foliage and a warm embankment hold the lower edge.

The original timber no longer spans the creek, but its repeating verticals and cross-braced silhouette remain the visual memory of the place.

What this print shows

The final composition places the trestle decisively on the right and looks upward along the line of its supports. The timber is caught in clear golden light rather than rendered as a dark silhouette. Repeating posts and diagonal braces create the structural rhythm, while the broad blue sky prevents the dense construction from overwhelming the image.

Light yellow-green foliage and the warm ground plane establish the creek-side setting without competing with the bridge. The aggressive crop avoids repeating the familiar historical side view and allows the trestle to be recognised through its construction, scale and direction of movement.

Common questions

Is the original wooden trestle still standing?

No. The surviving wooden structure was removed, and a modern pedestrian and bicycle bridge opened at the crossing in April 2023.

What structure does the print show?

The artwork depicts the former timber trestle rather than the bridge that stands at the site today. Its repeating wooden supports and diagonal cross-bracing provide the image's defining form.

Not documented — and therefore not claimed

  • The railroad was definitively abandoned in 1997 or definitively abandoned in 1998. — Credible sources disagree; public copy uses the common safe formulation 'the late 1990s'.
  • The modern bridge is the original wooden span. — The old structure was removed and the present Firefly Trail bridge is a replacement.
  • All visible timber dated from 1883. — The official structural report states that timber members were replaced repeatedly over the structure's life.
  • The site was where a particular musical movement began. — This is an unsupported narrative conclusion rather than a verifiable place fact.
