The record

Fire devastated the Georgia Theatre on June 19, 2009, damaging its roof and interior. The venue was rebuilt and reopened in August 2011, returning its illuminated name and marquee to Lumpkin Street.

This print holds the facade at blue hour, when the warm red-orange letters separate most clearly from the deep blue sky. A broad pale marquee crosses the brick front, a row of simplified dark openings sits above it, and the entrance is compressed into quiet shadow.

The building's survival is carried by that contrast: a familiar name lit again over a place that had nearly disappeared.

What this print shows

The facade is viewed almost straight on and allowed to fill most of the frame. Architectural detail is reduced into a red brick mass, a pale horizontal marquee and a dark roofline. The saturated blue sky provides the cool counterweight to the warm lettering, while the entrance and upper openings remain quiet enough for the illuminated name to carry the composition.

Not documented — and therefore not claimed

  • The rebuilding process lasted approximately 26 months. — The precise duration was found in only one source and was removed at the owner's correction gate.
  • The facade contains a fixed number of upper windows. — The approved artwork supports only the non-numerical description 'a row of simplified dark openings'.
  • Jars on bar counters and the entire town watching the fire. — These narrative details were not supported strongly enough for publication.
